How it works

Stud Finder uses the magnetometer built into your iPhone to detect the steel screws and nails that fasten drywall to the wood studs behind it. Slide the phone along the wall and watch the gauge spike when it crosses metal. Three hits in a vertical line means you’ve found a stud.

Tips for accurate results

Calibrate first: hold the phone still against a blank part of the wall for 2 seconds.
Remove magnetic phone cases (MagSafe) — they interfere with the sensor.
Slide slowly and confirm three hits in a vertical line before drilling.
Always test with a small nail before drilling. This is a magnetic aid, not an X-ray.
